Yakima River

By Ellensburg Lodging | No Comments

Ellensburg just wouldn’t be Ellensburg if it wasn’t offering vast stretches of natural beauty, and you’d be remiss as a tourist if you came to our Ellensburg hotel with no plans to take in some of our more untamed sights. Significant among these is the Yakima River.

This river is one of Washington’s most important rivers, providing irrigation to the agricultural industry of Yakima Valley. It takes its name from the native Yakama tribe, who lived amid its rugged western charm for centuries. Fans of the outdoors are sure to want to devote at least a day to the scenic wonders of the area.

In addition to sightseeing, the Yakima river provides opportunities for many other outdoor activities. It’s a popular destination for fly-fishing, hiking, rafting, and kayaking, particularly during its peak flow months between late spring and early summer. If you’re looking to take a raft through some stunning wilderness, your best bet is the Yakima River Canyon near Ellensburg. So stop on by the Days Inn when the weather starts getting warm, and bring your river gear!

Paint Ellensburg

By Ellensburg Lodging | No Comments

If you’re a fan of the modern art world, be sure to book your room at our Ellensburg lodging for this September.  It’s at this time every year that Gallery One rises up to canvass the community once again with the spirit and passion of the artist.

Paint Ellensburg is a weekend event that seeks to promote contemporary artists throughout the region.  It offers a walking art tour of the city, artist demonstrations, fine dining, live music, and the opportunity to invest in promising new pieces of art for yourself.  Most events are freely open to the public, and a modest ticket price gets you into the dinner and art auction.  Come show your support for the art world, and maybe end up with a little something to hang on your own wall at home!

You can read more about Gallery One and the Paint Ellensburg event at www.gallery-one.org.

The day is filled with not only a dachshund parade, but also dachshund races, dachshund tricks, and a dachshund costume contest.  So bring your dog down to share in the festivities with 250 other dachshunds from miles around!  To learn more about the event, or to register your animal, you can visit the official website at http://www.dachshundsonparade.com.

Bares and Broncs

By Ellensburg Lodging | No Comments

You can never quite quash the spirit of the frontier. It’s all around us at our Ellensburg RV park, in the people and in the rugged wilderness that makes this city great. It’s an evergreen, unconquerable force, and every May that force finds a proper celebration in the Bares and Broncs event down at the Ellensburg rodeo grounds.

Bares and Broncs is a futurity competition where breeders and horse riders from all over step up to prove who has the fiercest, wildest beast on four hooves. These horses are raised to buck, with a family tradition for brutality going back generations. Watch as their brave riders cling to their backs while a panel of judges rates each animal on the raw power with which they refuse to be ridden. If you’re into rodeos, either as a spectator or as a participant, then book your Ellensburg lodging today!

Ellensburg Frontier Village

By Ellensburg Lodging | No Comments

History is a difficult force to dodge within the limits of Ellensburg. Our Ellensburg hotel is nestled within a living, beating heart of our country’s historical pioneer spirit. It’s preserved in the downtown district and it finds its voice in our cowboy art shows and rodeo gatherings. However, if you’ve truly got a nose for America’s frontier heritage or a sensibility for good old turn-of-the-century charm, you should definitely make a date to visit the Frontier Village.

This village, nestled in the shadow of Craig’s Hill, is a beautifully restored bit of old Ellensburg complete with a blacksmith, general store, sarsaparilla saloon, trading post, and school house. Some of these buildings are actual relics of the past, relocated from their original homes at the foot of the Cascades.

On Labor Day weekend, during the Kittitas County Fair, the village comes alive with a staff dressed in historic costumes, providing tours, giving demonstrations, and even showing you how to pan for gold. Special events can also be arranged for year round, and the place has become a popular venue for outdoor weddings. So take a step into the past with the Frontier Village! Your inner pioneer will thank you.

Ginkgo Petrified Forest

By Ellensburg Lodging | No Comments

The natural wonders of Washington range from the beautiful to the downright extraordinary. On this latter end can be found the Ginkgo Petrified Forest which, at a modest drive from our Ellensburg lodging, is well worth the trip for anyone with an eye for the timeless majesty of the wilderness.

This park, registered as a national landmark, is considered to be one of the most unusual petrified forests in the world. It is here that we can catch a lingering glimpse of prehistoric Washington, back when it was a humid, swampy region that was home to the ginkgo tree. These trees, long extinct in the Americas, represent one of the rarest varieties of petrified wood in the world.

The park offers camping, boating, and a visitors’ center, so take the whole family down for a look into our region’s ancient history!
