Ellensburg Frontier Village

By Ellensburg Lodging | No Comments

History is a difficult force to dodge within the limits of Ellensburg. Our Ellensburg hotel is nestled within a living, beating heart of our country’s historical pioneer spirit. It’s preserved in the downtown district and it finds its voice in our cowboy art shows and rodeo gatherings. However, if you’ve truly got a nose for America’s frontier heritage or a sensibility for good old turn-of-the-century charm, you should definitely make a date to visit the Frontier Village.

This village, nestled in the shadow of Craig’s Hill, is a beautifully restored bit of old Ellensburg complete with a blacksmith, general store, sarsaparilla saloon, trading post, and school house. Some of these buildings are actual relics of the past, relocated from their original homes at the foot of the Cascades.

On Labor Day weekend, during the Kittitas County Fair, the village comes alive with a staff dressed in historic costumes, providing tours, giving demonstrations, and even showing you how to pan for gold. Special events can also be arranged for year round, and the place has become a popular venue for outdoor weddings. So take a step into the past with the Frontier Village! Your inner pioneer will thank you.

Ginkgo Petrified Forest

By Ellensburg Lodging | No Comments

The natural wonders of Washington range from the beautiful to the downright extraordinary. On this latter end can be found the Ginkgo Petrified Forest which, at a modest drive from our Ellensburg lodging, is well worth the trip for anyone with an eye for the timeless majesty of the wilderness.

This park, registered as a national landmark, is considered to be one of the most unusual petrified forests in the world. It is here that we can catch a lingering glimpse of prehistoric Washington, back when it was a humid, swampy region that was home to the ginkgo tree. These trees, long extinct in the Americas, represent one of the rarest varieties of petrified wood in the world.

The park offers camping, boating, and a visitors’ center, so take the whole family down for a look into our region’s ancient history!

Sarah Spurgeon Gallery

By Ellensburg Lodging | No Comments

Ellensburg has a strong community in both the artistic and academic circles, and in no place to these two intersect quite as well as they do in the Sarah Spurgeon Gallery. The next time you find yourself staying at our Ellensburg hotel, we recommend that you take the short trip down to the university in order to take in the wonders that this den of artistry has to offer.

This gallery, which offers free admission to the public, was created in the ongoing effort to connect people with art. Among its exhibits you can find the work of CWU students and faculty, along with pieces from artists from other walks of life. It is here where the people of Ellensburg also partake of workshops, lectures, and other programs dedicated to hone their relationships with the artistic world. Try it for yourself, and visit CWU’s Sarah Spurgeon Gallery today!

Chimpanzee and Human Communication Institute

By Ellensburg Lodging | No Comments

You’ve heard of apes who have mastered sign language in order to communicate with the human world. It might have sounded spectacular, maybe even science-fiction-y, but here at our Ellensburg lodging you will be sharing a city with a family of chimps capable of exactly this.

Meet Loulis, Tatu and Dar, the esteemed primate residents of the Chimpanzee and Human Communication Institute. Some of the most uniquely accomplished apes in the country, these three have gained enough mastery of American sign language to effectively talk with each other and their homo sapien coworkers. It is here in this sanctuary that these remarkable apes are engaged in humane, respectful research to help break down barriers between our species and theirs and to bring about a better world for our evolutionary cousins. You can take part in the experience by reserving time in a “Chimposium” and immersing yourself in a one hour educational workshop with the family. Visit the institute’s website at http://www.cwu.edu/chci/ for more information.
